All-natural is often used to describe a product or ingredient that has undergone minimal processing and contains no preservatives or artificial additives. There are, however, no regulations in place to enforce this description or guarantee. Organic, on the other hand, is heavily regulated by the FDA, and refers to a product or ingredient produced without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), or antibiotics. If an ingredient or product is labeled as organic, it must also be non-GMO as the use of genetically modified organisms is strictly prohibited by organic legislation. Non-GMO refers to ingredients that have not been derived from genetically modified organisms and/or genetic engineering techniques. This does not, however, guarantee an ingredient or product to be organic. An ingredient or product can be non-GMO but not organic as the federal government does not regulate non-GMO labeling.
